Our liver is essential when it comes to hormone health, it is responsible for removing toxic harmful substances from our body as well as breaking down and eliminating oestrogen. Our liver decides whether to excrete or recycle oestrogen, the liver priorities what it needs to detoxify and remove from our bodies and oestrogen may not be its priority which can lead to recycling of oestrogen, this combined with new oestrogen being produced that month may lead to excess oestrogen compared to progesterone.
Excess oestrogen is a commonly described ‘sex hormone imbalance’ and found in many female health problems including endometriosis, fibroids, PMS and PCOS.
When our liver is overloaded from toxins like coffee, alcohol, environmental pollutants, medications, processed foods, sugar, colourings and additives it may struggle to do its job efficiently. Loving your liver is an absolute must when looking to balance hormones.
How can we support our liver?
We can support our liver on a number of levels including:
- Avoid sugar, food additives and colourings
- Remove or reduce alcohol, only drink on weekends
- Reduce caffeine and replace with green tea
- Drink plenty of water
- Eat organic where you can
- Include turmeric and globe artichoke into your diet
- Eat foods high in fiber – brown rice, pulses, vegetables, flaxseeds
- Eat cruciferous vegetables daily – broccoli, sprouts, kale, cauliflower. They contain indole-3-carbonyl which binds and eliminates toxins that may interfere with hormonal balance
